Chapter Ten

Harrison woke with a splitting headache. He heard voices in the kitchen and looked at the window. It was still dark outside. He threw the covers off and slowly climbed out of bed. After putting on his clothes, he went to the kitchen in the hope that a cup of coffee would ease the pain of his hangover.

“Morning,” Barbara greeted in her usual cheery tone.

Harrison squinted, his head throbbing and ears ringing. He didn’t remember how many bottles of beer he had drunk the night before, but, when he saw at least a dozen empty bottles on the counter, he knew it had been too many.

“Here.” Barbara smiled and handed him a cup of coffee. “This might help.”

“What time is it?” he asked.

“It’s six-thirty.”

Harrison retreated to the table and sat down while Barbara continued tidying the kitchen and filling her thermos.

“I thought I heard Douglas?”

“You did. He had to get an early start so he said he would meet you later for lunch.”

“Okay,” Harrison nodded. “Say, are you going into town?”

“Yes. I have to be to work in an hour. Why?”

“Could I get a ride with you? I want to do some looking around.”

“Do you think that’s a wise idea?” Barbara leaned against the counter and dried her hands on a kitchen towel. “I mean after Judd’s warning and all.”

“I don’t care about that. He doesn’t scare me.”

“I don’t know about that, you were shaking pretty good. . .” She laughed.

“Well, maybe a little, but I do that when I get mad too, and he really pissed me off. Sorry.”

“No problem. He has that effect on a lot of people. Sure, I’ll give you a lift, but you have to promise to be careful.”

“I promise,” Harrison agreed.

After two more cups of coffee, Harrison’s headache subsided. He ate a couple slices of toast with some of Barbara’s homemade blackberry jam. It was just enough to take the edge off his morning hunger.

“Thank you again for letting me ride into town with you,” Harrison said for the umpteenth time that morning.

Barbara didn’t acknowledge it this time. She slowly drove down the driveway toward the street. When she reached it, she stopped and looked both ways.

Harrison felt all the warmth drain from his body when he noticed the black car parked in the neighbor’s driveway across the street. He didn’t say a word to Barbara, because he didn’t want to cause her any alarm. He watched in the side mirror as the car began to follow them. He took a deep breath and let it out slowly.

“So, don’t forget to give Douglas a call. Maybe you and he could try Granny’s for lunch. I hear they have great omelets and country-fried potatoes.”

“Sounds good.”

“Plus, they aren’t as busy as the Port Hole these days. They mostly cater to tourists and there aren’t that many this time of year.”

“I see,” Harrison said and took another glance in the mirror. The car was still tailing them.

Barbara slowed her SUV and pulled into the parking lot of McKay’s Grocery.
