Chapter Ten
Harrison woke with a splitting headache. He heard voices in the kitchen and looked at the window. It was still dark outside. He threw the covers off and slowly climbed out of bed. After putting on his clothes, he went to the kitchen in the hope that a cup of coffee would ease the pain of his hangover.
âMorning,â Barbara greeted in her usual cheery tone.
Harrison squinted, his head throbbing and ears ringing. He didnât remember how many bottles of beer he had drunk the night before, but, when he saw at least a dozen empty bottles on the counter, he knew it had been too many.
âHere.â Barbara smiled and handed him a cup of coffee. âThis might help.â
âWhat time is it?â he asked.
âItâs six-thirty.â
Harrison retreated to the table and sat down while Barbara continued tidying the kitchen and filling her thermos.
âI thought I heard Douglas?â
âYou did. He had to get an early start so he said he would meet you later for lunch.â
âOkay,â Harrison nodded. âSay, are you going into town?â
âYes. I have to be to work in an hour. Why?â
âCould I get a ride with you? I want to do some looking around.â
âDo you think thatâs a wise idea?â Barbara leaned against the counter and dried her hands on a kitchen towel. âI mean after Juddâs warning and all.â
âI donât care about that. He doesnât scare me.â
âI donât know about that, you were shaking pretty good. . .â She laughed.
âWell, maybe a little, but I do that when I get mad too, and he really pissed me off. Sorry.â
âNo problem. He has that effect on a lot of people. Sure, Iâll give you a lift, but you have to promise to be careful.â
âI promise,â Harrison agreed.
After two more cups of coffee, Harrisonâs headache subsided. He ate a couple slices of toast with some of Barbaraâs homemade blackberry jam. It was just enough to take the edge off his morning hunger.
âThank you again for letting me ride into town with you,â Harrison said for the umpteenth time that morning.
Barbara didnât acknowledge it this time. She slowly drove down the driveway toward the street. When she reached it, she stopped and looked both ways.
Harrison felt all the warmth drain from his body when he noticed the black car parked in the neighborâs driveway across the street. He didnât say a word to Barbara, because he didnât want to cause her any alarm. He watched in the side mirror as the car began to follow them. He took a deep breath and let it out slowly.
âSo, donât forget to give Douglas a call. Maybe you and he could try Grannyâs for lunch. I hear they have great omelets and country-fried potatoes.â
âSounds good.â
âPlus, they arenât as busy as the Port Hole these days. They mostly cater to tourists and there arenât that many this time of year.â
âI see,â Harrison said and took another glance in the mirror. The car was still tailing them.
Barbara slowed her SUV and pulled into the parking lot of McKayâs Grocery.
